Respect for the Aged Day

Respect for the Aged Day is a public holiday in Japan, and it is observed on the third Monday of September each year. The holiday is to honour and respect the country's elderly citizens.

The holiday was first celebrated as Old Folk's Day on September 15 and changed to Respect for the Aged Day in 1966. In 2003, the celebration day was changed to the third Monday of September due to the Happy Monday System.

During the holiday, people return home to visit and pay respect to the elders.

The Japanese government will give a commemorative silver sake cup to those who reach the age of 100; however, due to the increasing number of people reaching 100 years old, the silver dish is becoming too expensive for the government, and it was replaced with nickel alloy silver-plated design to reduce the cost.
