Republic Day (Italy)

Republic Day, also known as Festa Della Repubblica, is a national holiday in Italy, and it is observed on June 2 each year.

Republic Day commemorates the date when Italians were called to decide on the form of government following the end of Fascism and World War II: monarchy or republic.

An institutional referendum was held on June 2 – 3, 1946, and the result of the polls was to abolish the monarchy and form a republic.

The first Republic Day celebration took place on June 2, 1947. The official ceremony includes the solemn flag-raising ceremony, the military parade, and the laying of a ceremonial wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is located at the Altare Della Patria in Roma.
