Readjustment Movement Day (Guinea-Bissau)

Readjustment Movement Day is a public holiday in Guinea-Bissau, and it is observed on November 14 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the 1980 Guinea-Bissau coup, which took place on November 14, 1980.

Guinea-Bissau is a country in West Africa. It became the Portuguese colony with the name of Portuguese Guinea by the 19th century. The war of independence led by the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) against the Portuguese rule started in 1963, and lasted over 11 years.

Guinea-Bissau gained its independence on September 24, 1973. Luis Cabral, one of the founders of PAIGC, became the first President of Guinea-Bissau. In the first several years after the independence, the Portuguese left the country and the economy in Guinea-Bissau deteriorated, which led to general dissatisfaction with the government.

On November 14, 1980, Prime Minister General João Bernardo Vieira staged the bloodless military coup and overthrew the President Luis Cabral, who was sent into exile. The political instability lasted many years afterwards in Guinea-Bissau.
