Proclamation of Independence Day (East Timor)

Proclamation of Independence Day is a public holiday in East Timor (Timor-Leste), observed on November 28 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when East Timor declared independence on this day in 1975.

East Timor is an island country in Southeast Asia. The Portuguese traders arrived in East Timor for Sandalwood in the early 16th century. In the following years, the Portuguese extended their influence in the area, and East Timor became a Portuguese colony in 1702.

During World War II, Portuguese Timor was occupied by Australian and Dutch forces in 1941 and then by Japanese forces in 1942. Portuguese control was reinstated in 1945 when the war ended, but Portugal did not invest much in infrastructure and education. On April 25, 1974, the Carnation Revolution in Portugal overthrew the authoritarian Estado Novo regime, and the Portuguese Timor was abandoned.

The civil war between political parties broke out in 1975, and the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin) won the civil war. On November 28, 1975, Fretilin formally declared independence from Portugal.
