President Ntaryamira Day is a public holiday in Burundi, and it is observed on April 6 each year. The holiday commemorates the death anniversary of President Cyprien Ntaryamira in 1994.
Cyprien Ntaryamira was born on March 6, 1955 in Burundi. He co-founded the Front for Democracy (FRODEBU) in 1986, and the party won Burundi's general elections in 1993. Cyprien Ntaryamira was appointed as the Minister of Agriculture in July 1993.
Three months later, the President of Burundi and other top officials were killed by the Tutsi soldiers. Cyprien Ntaryamira survived and became the President of Burundi in January 1994. He was inaugurated on February 5 and put efforts into restoring peace and human rights.
On April 6, 1994, Cyprien Ntaryamira died in a plane crash when it was shot down near the Kigali International Airport. Juvénal Habyarimana, the President of Rwanda, also died in the same plane crash.
