President Ndadaye's Day (Burundi)

President Ndadaye's Day is a public holiday in Burundi, and it is observed on October 21 each year. The holiday commemorates the death anniversary of President Melchior Ndadaye, who was assassinated in 1993.

Melchior Ndadaye was born on March 28, 1953 in Muramvya Province. He fled to Rwanda during the 1972 massacres in Burundi. He was involved in the foundation of the Burundi Workers' Party in 1979 and became a key leader of the party, but the party was disbanded in the 1980s after he left.

Melchior Ndadaye returned to Burundi in 1983 and founded the Front for Democracy in Burundi (FRODEBU) in 1986. The FRODEBU won the 1993 election, and Melchior Ndadaye became the President of Burundi on July 10, 1993. He was the first Hutu president of Burundi.

Although he was cautiously trying to resolve the ethnic conflicts in Burundian society, some of his actions provoked tension in the community. Melchior Ndadaye was assassinated on October 21, 1993, which sparked severe ramifications across the country and developed into the decade-long Burundi Civil War.
