New Caledonia Day is a public holiday in New Caledonia, and it is observed on September 24 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when New Caledonia became a French protectorate.
New Caledonia is a Polynesian island country, and people started to inhabit the islands about 3,000 years ago. In 1774, British explorer James Cook first sighted New Caledonia. European contacts became more frequent after 1840 because of sandalwood trading.
On September 24, 1853, the French formally took possession of New Caledonia and made it a French protectorate, and New Caledonia became an overseas territory in 1946. The voters chose to remain a part of France in the most recent two referendums in 2018 and 2020.
