National Heroes' Day (Saint Kitts and Nevis)

National Heroes' Day is a public holiday in Saint Kitts and Nevis, and it is observed on September 16 each year, three days before Independence Day. The holiday honors individuals who made significant contributions to the country.

Saint Kitts and Nevis is an island country in the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea, and it gained full independence from the United Kingdom on September 19, 1983.

National Heroes' Day was established in 1996 along with the National Honors Act. The holiday celebration is the birthday of Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, the first Premier of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Robert Bradshaw was born on September 8, 1916, and became a machine apprentice in a sugar factory when he was 16, where he became a labor activist. In 1945, he became the St Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Labour Party president and entered politics one year later. He served as the first Premier of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla from 1967 until he died of prostate cancer in 1978.

He was awarded the title of First National Hero in 1996. Several individuals were also affirmed as National Heroes since then by the National Assembly:
