Independence Day (Saint Kitts and Nevis)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Saint Kitts and Nevis on September 19 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Saint Kitts and Nevis's independence from the United Kingdom in 1983.

Saint Kitts and Nevis is an island country in the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea. Indigenous people inhabited the island thousands of years before Christopher Columbus first sighted the island in 1493. The British settled on Saint Kitts in 1623, and the French settled in 1625.

To enforce Spanish claims, the Spanish destroyed the English and French settlements in 1629 but permitted them to re-establish their colonies in 1630. In the following years, the islands became the premier British and French bases to expand in the Caribbean.

In the late 17th century, the British and the French fought for control over the islands, and the British acquired the islands in 1713 after wars. Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Anguilla formed the federation in 1882.

In 1958, the federation joined the West Indies Federation, which collapsed in 1962. The islands became an associated state of the United Kingdom and were granted control of internal affairs in 1967. However, Anguilla was unhappy with St. Kitts' domination and left the federation in the same year, which was formally separated in 1980.

Saint Kitts and Nevis gained full independence from the United Kingdom on September 19, 1983.
