National Day of Catalonia is a regional holiday in the autonomous community of Catalonia in Spain, and it is observed on September 11 each year.
Unlike celebrating the victories in many places, National Day of Catalonia is a festival that commemorates the fall of Barcelona during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714.
Barcelona is a city on the coast of northeastern Spain, and it is the capital and largest city of the autonomous community of Catalonia. Barcelona had fallen to the forces of Archduke Charles, an Austrian field marshal, in the early part of the War of the Spanish Succession, and it was a center of Catalan separatism again Philip V, the King of Spain in the 18th century.
In 1713, the city of Barcelona was surrounded by the Franco-Spanish forces, and after being besieged for over 14 months, the Catalan leaders decided to surrender on September 11, 1714. The defeat represents the end of the Principality of Catalonia as a political entity, and as a result, its independent institutions and the institutional system were suppressed.
