National Day is a public holiday in Laos, and it is observed on December 2 each year. The holiday commemorates the end of the monarchy and the establishment of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in 1975.
In the late 19th century, Laos became the protectorate of French Indochina. During the First Indochina War, the Lao People's Liberation Army, a communist political movement, began the war against the French colonial forces. Laos gained independence as a constitutional monarchy on October 22, 1953.
The Laotian Civil War started in 1959 and lasted almost 2 decades until 1975 between the Royal Lao Government and the Communist Pathet Lao. On December 2, 1975, the Pathet Lao gained victory and overthrew the royalist government, forcing King Savang Vatthana to abdicate, and the Lao People's Democratic Republic was proclaimed.
