National Day is a public holiday in Comoros, and it is observed on July 6 each year. The holiday commemorates when Comoros gained independence from France in 1976.
Comoros is an island country in the Indian Ocean. People from the coast of Africa, the Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia, and Madagascar inhabited the islands over the centuries.
Malagasy warriors started raiding Comoros for slaves in the 18th century, which devastated the islands. The French took possession of Mayotte in 1841 and Mwali and Ngazidja in 1886. The islands were united and became a province of the colony of Madagascar in 1912.
In 1961, Comoros gained autonomous rule following the referendum in 1958. In 1974, the independence referendum was held on all four islands. Three voted for independence, while Mayotte voted to remain under the French administration. On July 6, 1975, Comoros declared independence, and Ahmed Abdallah became its first president.
Comoros was in a period of political turmoil with more than 20 coups or attempted coups since its independence. Due to the constant political instability, Comoros is one of the poorest countries with a low Human Development Index.
