National Day (Brunei)

National Day is a public holiday in Brunei, observed on February 23 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Brunei's complete independence from the British Empire in 1984.

Brunei is a country located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, and it is surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak, except for its coastline with the South China Sea. During the 15th century, the Bruneian Empire became an important power and controlled a large portion of the island of Borneo. Due to the civil war and the arrival of the western powers, the Bruneian Empire started to decline in the 17th century.

By 1888, Brunei became a British protectorate after signing the Treaty of Protection with the British Empire. During World War II, Brunei and several other Southeast Asian countries were occupied by the Japanese until 1945, when Brunei was liberated by the Australian forces.

In 1959, Brunei became a self-governing state under the new constitution, although its foreign affairs and defense remained the responsibility of the United Kingdom. Brunei declared independence from the British on January 1, 1984, and gained complete independence on February 23, 1984.
