Mountain Day is a public holiday in Japan, and it is observed on August 11 each year.
Mountain Day is to honour and give thanks for the blessings of the mountains. It is a new public holiday first celebrated in 2016. The date of August 11 was picked because the Chinese character "八" (eight for the eighth month of August) used in written Japanese looks like the mountain, and 11 looks like two trees.
As a new holiday, there are not many established customs yet, but many people will go to the mountains hiking or walking.
