Martyr's Day (Uganda)

Martyr's Day is a public holiday in Uganda, observed on June 3 each year.

Martyr's Day commemorates the event when 23 Anglicans and 22 Catholics were executed in the historic Kingdom of Buganda after they converted to Christianity.

The first set of protestant missionaries arrived in Buganda in 1877 with the request of Muteesa I, and many prominent chiefs became Christians after. In 1844, Kabaka Mwanga II succeeded to the throne. Concerned about the influence of Christianity, he ordered the execution of Christians from 1885 to 1887.
