Maore Day (Comoros)

Maore Day, also known as Journée Nationale Maoré, is a public holiday in Comoros, and it is observed on November 12 each year.

Comoros is an island country in the Indian Ocean. People from the coast of Africa, the Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia, and Madagascar inhabited the islands over the centuries. The French took possession of Mayotte in 1841 and soon other three islands. The islands were united and became a province of the colony of Madagascar in 1912.

Comoros gained autonomous rule within the French community in 1961 and declared independence on July 6, 1975. On November 12, 1975, all four islands as full members were admitted to the United Nations. However, in the 1974 independence referendum, only three islands voted for independence, while Mayotte voted to remain under the French administration. After the referendum, Mayotte broke away from Comoros and remained with France.

The United Nations adopted several relevant resolutions to recognize the sovereignty of Comoros, an archipelago of four islands, but France maintains its occupation of Mayotte. Comoros declared November 12 as a national holiday to condemn the French presence in Mayotte.
