Los Santos Uprising Day (Panama)

Los Santos Uprising Day is a public holiday in Panama, observed on November 10 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when Los Santos declared its separation from the Spanish Empire on November 10, 1921.

The indigenous peoples widely settled the Isthmus of Panama before Europeans arrived in Panama at the beginning of the 16th century. The Spanish founded the first permanent settlement in 1510, and the settlers' leader claimed the whole area under the Spanish crown in 1913.

In the 1800s, the Spanish-American wars of independence were heating up all across Latin America. According to the legend, on November 10, 1821, a legendary figure Rufina Alfaro in Los Santos, led a group of people armed with stones and sticks to seize the Spanish soldiers and achieve independence without spilling blood.

The Los Santos independence accelerated the independence of Panama City. On November 28, 1821, Panama also successfully overthrew the Spanish rule without military conflicts.
