Liberty Day (Portugal)

Liberty Day, also known as Carnation Revolution, or the 25 April, is a public holiday in Portugal, and it is observed on April 25 each year. The holiday commemorates the Carnation Revolution and the first free elections in Portugal on the same day the following year. Carnation Revolution was a military coup in Lisbon, Portugal's capital and largest city, to overthrow the Estado Novo regime.

When soldiers took to the streets, they were joined by civilians who shared the ideas of independence and anti-colonialism. Supported by the civilians, the revolution changed the Portuguese political system to a modern democracy and brought democracy and civil liberties to the Portuguese people.

The name Carnation Revolution arose because Celeste Caeiro, a restaurant worker, gave out red and white carnations to the soldiers when the population took to the streets to celebrate the end of the dictatorship.
