King's Birthday (New Zealand)

King's Birthday is a public holiday in New Zealand and its associated territories and is observed on the first Monday in June each year.

King's Birthday was celebrated as Queen's Birthday before 2023 to celebrate the monarch's birthday. However, the date is not the monarch's actual birthday. Queen's Birthday celebration first started in 1788 on the birthday of the King of Great Britain. People celebrated the holiday on the actual birthday in the beginning and changed it to the second Monday in June 1936 in the United Kingdom after King George V died. However, people in other countries and regions have celebrated this holiday on different days.

Queen's Birthday was changed back to King's Birthday. The holiday is an important recognition of the new monarch, King Charles III, who became the King of the United Kingdom and the 14 other Commonwealth realms following the death of his mother, Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022.
