Janmashtami, or Krishna Janmashtami, is a gazetted holiday in India, and it falls on the eighth (Ashtami) day of the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada, which falls in late August or early September of the Gregorian calendar.
Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Krishna, who is a major Hindu God and also the eighth avatar of the god Vishnu.
