Indra Jatra is a holiday in Nepal and the state of Sikkim, India, and it is a festival celebrated around August and September in the Gregorian calendar.
Indra Jatra celebration lasts 8 days, and is one of the biggest festivals of the Newar community. According to the legend, Lord Indra, the Hindu God of Rain and the King of Heaven, went to the Kathmandu Valley to steal the rare flowers for his mother. He was caught, but people released him after knowing who he was. In return, people asked him to visit the valley each year to bless them with rains and prosperity for a good harvest.
