Independence Day (Yemen)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Yemen, observed on November 30 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of South Yemen's independence from the United Kingdom in 1967.

Yemen is a country in Western Asia, and people inhabited the area for thousands of years. Several dynasties emerged before the area was divided between the Ottoman Empire and the British Empire in the 1800s.

Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, North Yemen was established in 1918, while South Yemen remained a British protectorate with the name of Aden Protectorate.

In the 1960s, two anti-British guerrilla groups National Liberation Front (NLF) and the Front for the Liberation of Occupied South Yemen (FLOSY) were formed and started grenade attacks on killing off-duty British officers and policemen.

In 1967, the NLF and FLOSY provoked the street riots in Aden. Although the British deployed troops to crush the riots, these riots further inspired ambushes in other places. The repeated guerrilla attacks against British forces by the NLF and FLOSY made the British leave Aden in November 1967.

Following the British departure, the Federation of South Arabia and the Protectorate of South Arabia merged and created the People's Republic of Southern Yemen on November 30, 1967.
