Independence Day (Uzbekistan)

Independence Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Uzbekistan, and it is observed on September 1 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when Uzbekistan declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Uzbekistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. Nomads first inhabited the area in the first millennium BC. Over thousands of years, the region was ruled by different empires, such as the Persian Empire, the Mongol, the Timurid Empire, etc. From the 19th century, the Russian Empire began to extend its power into Central Asia, and Uzbekistan territory became a Russian protectorate in 1873. In 1924, it became one of the constituent republics of the Soviet Union: the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, and it was renamed the Republic of Uzbekistan later.

In 1991, after the failure of the August coup in Moscow, Uzbekistan declared independence on August 31, however, it formally remained a part of the Soviet Union until it collapsed on December 26, 1991. Uzbekistan proclaimed September 1 as Independence Day.
