Independence Day (Uganda)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Uganda, and it is observed on October 9 each year. The holiday celebrates Uganda's independence from the United Kingdom in 1962.

The British East Africa Company arrived and controlled Uganda in 1888, and in 1893, the company transferred the administration rights to the British government. In 1894, Uganda became a protectorate territory under the British Empire.

After World War II, many African countries gained independence in the late 1950s and early 1960s from the rule of France or the United Kingdom. On October 9, 1962, Uganda declared independence with Queen Elizabeth II as head of the state. A year after, Uganda became a republic but remained the membership in the Commonwealth of Nations.
