Independence Day is a public holiday in Turkmenistan, and it is observed on September 27 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Turkmenistan achieved its independence in 1991.
Turkmenistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. People inhabited the territory for thousands of years under different nations and cultures. Russian forces began to take control of Central Asia in the late 19th century. In 1881, the Russian Empire occupied Turkmenistan.
After the 1917 Russian Revolution, Turkmenistan joined the Basmachi Rebellion against the rule of the newly formed Soviet Union, but the Red Army defeated the Basmachi forces in 1923. In 1921, the Turkmen Oblast was established, and it turned into the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic in 1925.
Turkmenistan parliament declares sovereignty in 1990. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Turkmenistan declared independence on October 27, 1991. However, the celebration day was changed to September 27 in 2017.
