Independence Day is a public holiday in the Bahamas, and it is observed on July 10 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the Bahamas' independence on this day in 1973.
The Bahamas is a sovereign country east of the Florida Keys in the Atlantic. People inhabited the islands for centuries before Christopher Columbus first arrived in 1492 and claimed the islands for Spain. The Spanish had little interest in the Bahamas except for the labor sources and abandoned the islands.
The British people arrived on the islands in the late 17th century. However, the islands became the pirates' base because of the lack of government functioning. In 1718, the British restored the orderly government and made the Bahamas a British crown colony. After the independence of the United States in 1776, over 7,000 Loyalists were relocated to the Bahamas.
After World War II, the political movement began in the Bahamas, and two political parties were established in the 1950s: the Progressive Liberal Party and the United Bahamian Party. The Bahamas achieved self-government in 1964 and full independence on July 10, 1973.
