Independence Day (Senegal)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Senegal, observed on April 4 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Senegal's independence from France on April 4, 1960.

Senegal, officially the Republic of Senegal, is a country in West Africa. People inhabited the territory for thousands of years under various kingdoms. Like other countries in West Africa, the Portuguese landed on the coastline in the mid-15th century, followed by traders from other European countries.

The French gained control of the island of Gorée and used it as the base to trade slaves in 1677. Following the abolition of slavery in the 1850s, the French began to expand onto the mainland and built the French colony in Western Africa.

Senegal signed the transfer of power agreement with France on April 4, 1960, when Senegal proclaimed its independence. Leopold Senghor became the first President of Senegal.
