Independence Day (Mali)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Mali, observed on September 22 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Mali's independence on September 22, 1960.

Mali, officially the Republic of Mali, is a landlocked country in West Africa. People inhabited the territory since prehistoric times under different rules. The Mali Empire was established in the 13th century and reached its high in the 14th century. The Songhai Empire gradually gained independence and eventually surpassed the Mali empire in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Following the abolition of slavery in the 1800s, the French began to expand onto the mainland and built the French colony in Western Africa. In the late 19th century, Mali fell under the control of France as a part of French Sudan.

In January 1959, Mali and Senegal united to become the Mali Federation, which gained independence on June 20, 1960. However, Senegal withdrew from the federal in August 1960, and the Sudanese Republic became independent on September 22, 1960. Modibo Keita became the first President of Mali.
