Republic Day is a public holiday in Malawi on July 6 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when Malawi gained independence from the British in 1964. The Malawi area became a British protectorate in 1889 and was renamed Nyasaland in 1907.
In 1953, Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, and Nyasaland formed the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland as a single semi-autonomous region dissolved in 1963.
In 1961, Hastings Banda's Malawi Congress Party (MCP) won the election, and Banda became the Prime Minister in 1963. On July 6, 1964, Nyasaland declared independence from the British as the Republic of Malawi and renamed itself Malawi. Hastings Banda became the first president.
