Independence Day (Jamaica)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Jamaica, and it is observed on August 6 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of Jamaica's independence from the British on August 6, 1962.

Jamaica is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea. It came under Spanish rule following the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. In 1656, Jamaica became a British crown colony following the Spanish defeats. Under British rule, slavery was abolished in 1834 and fully emancipated all slaves in 1838.

In the early 20th century, unemployment and poverty remained a problem in Jamaica, leading to various movements. After World War II, the decolonization movement in Jamaica moved quickly, and Jamaica gained increasing autonomy from the British. On August 6, 1962, the British granted independence to Jamaica.
