Independence Day (Guinea)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Guinea, and it is observed on October 2 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Guinea declared its independence from France in 1958.

Guinea is a coastal country in West Africa. The territory belonged to different empires in the past centuries. The most famous one is the Songhai Empire, which began in the 1460s and ended in the 1580s. On its peak, it was one of the largest states in African history.

The European traders arrived in the 16th century. In the mid-19th century, the French started the military penetration in the area, and Guinea became part of French West Africa in the 1890s.

Following the collapse of the French Fourth Republic in 1958, a referendum was held in September 1958, and 82.6% of voters supported the creation of the Fifth Republic. At the same time, the colonies were given the choice between immediate independence and more autonomy in a new French Community. All African colonies except Guinea voted for more autonomy.

Guinea declared its independence from France on October 2, 1958, and established a sovereign and independent republic. Ahmed Sékou Touré became the first President of Guinea and served as the President for 26 years until his death in 1984.
