Independence Day is a public holiday in Cote d'Ivoire, and it is observed on August 7 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Cote d'Ivoire gained its independence from France in 1960.
Cote d'Ivoire, also known as Ivory Coast, is a country located in West Africa. It was home to several states before the arrival of the Europeans. The Portuguese voyage first arrived in West Africa in 1482.
In 1637, France established a mission at Assinie. In the 1840s, France signed a series of treaties with the kings and chiefs in West Africa and made their territories the French protectorate. After the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War, the French government abandoned the colonial plans in West Africa in 1871.
However, France assumed direct control of West Africa in 1886. In 1893, Cote d'Ivoire became a French colony.
In 1946, France granted citizenship to all African colonies due to the gratitude for African loyalty in World War II. On December 4, 1958, Cote d'Ivoire successfully became an autonomous member. As a result, in 1960, Cote d'Ivoire declared its independence.
