How to Sort a Range Based on a Customized Column

When sorting a column or data range, you might need to sort based on a customized column because the existing order from A to Z or from Z to A is not the order you want.

For example, in a group with Assistant, Worker, and Supervisor, when sorting A to Z, it comes "Assistant, Supervisor, and Worker"; when sorting Z to A, it comes "Worker, Supervisor, and Assistant". Either order is not the order you want: Assistant, Worker, and Supervisor. In this case, you can sort the column based on the customized column.

Step 1: Click any cell in the data range you want to sort;

Step 2: Click the "Home" tab from the ribbon;

Step 3: Click the triangle after the "Sort & Filter" in the "Editing" section;

Step 4: Click "Custom Sort" from the drop-down list;

Step 5: In the "Sort" window,

1. Select the sort column in the first box (Column A in this example);

2. Select "Cell Values" in the second box;

3. Select "Custom List" in the third box.

Step 6: In the "Custom Lists" window, type the order you want to sort with (Assistant Worker Supervisor) in the box on the right;

Step 7: Click "OK" and return back to the "Sort" window, the sorting order will display in the third box;

Step 8: Click "OK" again and the data will be in the order you want.
