The History of Labour Day?
Labour Day in Saint Martin, observed every year on May 1st, is rooted in the international labour movement of the late 19th century. The holiday traces back to the struggle for fair working conditions, especially the eight-hour workday movement that began in the United States in the 1880s.
By the early 20th century, many countries, including those in the Caribbean, had adopted May 1st as a day to recognize and celebrate workers.
Because Saint Martin is divided into two territories — the French Collectivity of Saint-Martin in the north and Sint Maarten, a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in the south — the observance of Labour Day reflects both European traditions and local Caribbean identity:
France officially recognized Labour Day as a public holiday in 1947. As a French territory, Saint-Martin follows this national recognition, celebrating May 1st as Labour Day (Fête du travail).
Across the Caribbean, Labour Day is strongly tied to the rise of trade unions, anti-colonial struggles, and efforts to improve wages, job security, and social protections for workers.
