The History of Europe Day?

Europe Day marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, delivered on May 9, 1950, by Robert Schuman, the French Foreign Minister who was born in Luxembourg City. In his declaration, Schuman proposed uniting Europe's coal and steel industries under a single authority to prevent future wars—an idea that became the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951. This initiative laid the foundation for the modern European Union, promoting peace, stability, and economic cooperation after the devastation of World War II.

Luxembourg was one of the six founding members of the ECSC (along with France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands). Its strategic location and strong support for European integration made it a key player in the early development of the European project.

Although Europe Day was recognized across the EU as a day of European unity since 1985, it wasn't a public holiday in most countries.

In 2019, Luxembourg became the first EU member state to officially designate May 9 as a public holiday.

The move reflected the country's deep commitment to European integration and honored Robert Schuman's legacy as a founding father of the EU. For Luxembourg, Europe Day is more than a celebration, it's a reminder of the nation's historic contribution to European unity.
