The History of the Day of Murcia?
The Day of Murcia commemorates the approval of the Statute of Autonomy of the Region of Murcia on June 9, 1982, by the Spanish Parliament. The statute formally established Murcia as an autonomous community under Spain's 1978 Constitution, which reorganized the country into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities.
After the Spanish Constitution of 1978, regions with strong historical or cultural identities were granted autonomy.
Murcia, which had been a province under Castile since the late Middle Ages, campaigned for its own statute to achieve self-government and recognition.
The 1982 statute gave Murcia a Regional Assembly, Presidency, and Council of Government, marking the beginning of its modern political life as an autonomous entity.
The first official Day of Murcia was celebrated on June 9, 1983, one year after the statute came into force.
It was intended both as an institutional commemoration of autonomy and as a regional identity celebration for Murcia's people.
