Haitian Flag Day and University Day

Haitian Flag Day and University Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Haiti, and it is observed on May 18 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the flag of Haiti was created and adopted in 1803, as well as the celebration of the Haitian educational system.

Haiti is a country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea and it occupies the western three-eighths of the island of Hispaniola. On January 1, 1804, Haiti gained its independence from France.

The first flag of Haiti was adopted on May 18, 1803, during the Haitian Revolution by the revolution leader of Jean-Jacques Dessalines and his goddaughter Catherine Flon. Dessalines later became the first ruler of Haiti after independence. The flag designs changed several times over the last hundreds of years.

The current flag is a bicolour flag with blue on the top and red at the bottom. A small white rectangular panel stays in the middle of the flag for the coat of arms. The coat of arms has a royal palm tree, atrophy of weapons, and a green hill, where the palm tree symbolizes independence.
