Freedom Day (Malta)

Freedom Day is a public holiday in Malta observed on March 31 each year.

Freedom Day celebrates the anniversary of the withdrawal of British troops and the Royal Navy from Malta in 1979. Malta became a British protectorate in 1800 and a British Crown colony in 1813. Malta gained independence as the State of Malta in 1964.

In 1971, the Malta Labour Party won the elections and declared Malta a republic with the President as the head of state. The new government negotiated with the British Empire and signed the lease agreement to extend the lease to the end of March 1979.
