Flag Day (Panama)

Flag Day is a public holiday in Panama, observed on November 4 each year. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the new Panama flag after achieving independence from Colombia in 1903.

The United States flag followed the first flag proposal, containing 13 red and yellow stripes, but the Panamanian leaders did not accept this. The inaugural First Lady of Panama, María de la Ossa de Amador, designed the first flag on November 1, 1903. The only difference from the present flag is that the upper left quadrant was blue, which was shifted to white.

The blue and red each represent one political party. The white stands for peace and purity; the blue star stands for purity and honesty; the red star represents authority and law; and the stars stand for the new republic.
