Emancipation Day is a public holiday in Puerto Rico, observed on March 22 each year. The holiday commemorates when slavery was abolished in Puerto Rico in 1873. Slavery existed in Puerto Rico in the 1500s as manpower to work in the mines and sugar cane plantations.
On March 22, 1873, slavery was officially abolished in Puerto Rico, but with one caveat. The slaves were not immediately emancipated, and they were forced to work for their masters for three more years to buy their freedom which their last masters set.
