Day of Madrid

Day of Madrid is a regional holiday in the autonomous community of Madrid in Spain, and it is observed on May 2 each year.

Day of Madrid commemorates the rebellion over Napoleon's invasion on May 2, 1808. Napoleon's army invaded Spain in February 1808 and controlled Madrid on March 23, 1808. The people of Madrid rebelled against the French troops on May 2, 1808.

The French troops took brutal steps in suppressing the rebellion and regained control of the city. Many hundreds of people died in the fighting. Although the rebellion itself was not successful, it sparked the Spanish War of Independence which lasted 6 years until April 17, 1814, when Spain finally gained independence.

On March 1, 1983, the Madrid region became an autonomous community of Spain.
