Custom Chief's Day (Vanuatu)

Custom Chief's Day is a public holiday in Vanuatu, and it is observed on March 5 each year. The holiday marks the important roles of tribal chiefs in Vanuatu.

Vanuatu is an island country located in the South Pacific Ocean. People began to inhabit the islands about 3000 years ago. Both France and the United Kingdom were interested in the islands and they agreed to administer the islands jointly in 1906.

Following the decolonization after World War II, independent movements in Vanuatu started in the early 1970s. On July 30, 1980, Vanuatu gained independence. However, the ancient traditions remained mostly untouched, and tribal chiefs still play very important roles in the communities of Vanuatu.

In 1977, a National Council of Chiefs, the Malvatu Mauri, was set up by the government and it plays a significant role in advising the government on all matters concerning the culture and traditions in Vanuatu.
