Constitution Day (Palau)

Constitution Day is a public holiday in Palau, observed on July 9 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the Constitution of Palau adopted in 1980.

The Republic of Palau is an island country in the western Pacific. The islands were first sighted in 1522 and became part of the Spanish colony in 1885. In 1899, Spain sold these islands to German after its defeat in the Spanish-American War in 1898.

During World War I, the Japanese occupied the islands in 1919, then surrendered after World War II. As a result, the United Nations created the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) in 1947 and was under the United States' administration.

On May 10, 1979, four Trust Territory districts formed the Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia, but the district of Palau opted for independence. The Constitution of Palau was drafted in 1979 and ratified in the Constitution Referendum on July 9, 1980.

In 1981, the Constitution took into force, and the Republic of Palau was established. On October 1, 1994, Palau achieved its independence.
