Constitution Day (Norway)

Constitution Day, or Seventeenth May or National Day, is a public holiday in Norway, observed on May 17 yearly.

Constitution Day is when the Constitution of Norway was signed at Eidsvoll on May 17, 1814. In the Napoleonic Wars, Denmark–Norway was defeated. The Constitution was signed to declare Norway as an independent country to avoid being ceded to Sweden.

However, Norway was under Swedish rule then, and full independence was not achieved until June 7, 1905. The celebration of the day began spontaneously after the Constitution was signed. Still, the King of Sweden and Norway at that time was reluctant to allow the celebrations, and the holiday celebration was even banned for a few years in the 1820s. After years of fights, Constitution Day gained public popularity in 1833.
