Constitution Day (Ghana)

Constitution Day is a public holiday in Ghana, and it is observed on January 7 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the 1992 constitution became official on January 7, 1993.

Ghana gained political independence from British rule and adopted the first constitution in 1957. The constitution was then amended in 1960, which gradually turned Ghana into an authoritarian state. These changes further resulted in several unstable military regimes and made the previous constitutions meaningless.

In 1992, a national referendum on a new constitution was held with over 92% of voters supporting a new constitution, and the new constitution was established on January 7, 1993.
