Constitution Day (Fiji)

Constitution Day is a public holiday in Fiji, and it is observed on September 7 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the current constitution was adopted in 2013.

Fiji is an island country in Oceania in the South Pacific Ocean. The European first arrived here in the 17th century. The British annexed Fiji and founded the Colony of Fiji on October 10, 1874. 96 years after, Fiji gained its independence on October 10, 1970, and Fiji became an independent nation within the Commonwealth of Nations.

Fiji had four constitutions since its independence: 1970, 1990, 1997 and 2013. The current constitution was signed into law by President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau on September 6, 2013. The new constitution eliminated the race-based electoral rolls, race-based seat quotas, and also lowered the voting age to 18 years old.
