Constitution Day is a public holiday in the Cayman Islands, and it is observed on the first Monday in July each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the first Constitution was adopted on July 4, 1959.
The Cayman Islands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory in the western Caribbean Sea. Christopher Columbus first sighted the islands on May 10, 1503. In the following years, a variety of people with various backgrounds started to settle on the island. The British formally took control of the Cayman Islands along with Jamaica Islands in 1670. In 1863, the islands became administered as a dependency of the Crown Colony of Jamaica.
In the 1950s, the tourism economy grew rapidly. As a result, the Cayman Islands was granted a large degree of internal autonomy. In 1959, the first Constitution was adopted, which gave women's right to vote. In 1962, Jamaica gained its independence from the United Kingdom, and the Cayman Islands became a separate Crown colony.
