There are 54 members in the Commonwealth, and they are located in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, Europe and the Pacific. The Commonwealth originally only included the former British territories or its colonies, but it is now open to any country that wants to join.
In 1931, five countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, the Irish Free State, Newfoundland, and the Union of South Africa formed the British Commonwealth of Nations, and it renamed the Commonwealth of Nations in 1946.
