Coming of Age Day, also known as Adult Day, is a public holiday in Japan, and it is observed on the second Monday of January each year.
Coming of Age Day is to welcome new adults into society and to honour those who have reached the age of 20 between April 2 of the previous year and April 1 of the current year. In Japan, people are officially considered adults when reaching the age of 20.
Coming of Age Day is one of people's most important days because of the expanding human rights and the increased responsibilities. Women usually wear traditional clothes furisode, and men nowadays usually wear formal western suits during the ceremony.
The ceremony often occurs in the community hall or the school's gym, and young adults often celebrate in groups by drinking after the ceremony.
