Citizenship Day (Northern Mariana Islands)

Citizenship Day is a public holiday in the Northern Mariana Islands, observed on November 4 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the Northern Mariana Islands citizens acquiring United States citizenship in 1986.

The Northern Mariana Islands is an unincorporated territory and commonwealth of the United States in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, and it consists of 14 islands in the Mariana Archipelago.

Spain officially claimed the islands in 1565. In 1898, Spain surrendered Guam to the US forces and sold the Mariana Islands to Germany 1899.

During World War I, Japan acquired most of the islands, including the Caroline, Mariana, Marshall, and Palau islands, in 1919 but surrendered them after the defeat in World War II. As a result, these islands became the United Nations Trust Territory under the administration of the United States. The territory was divided into six districts: the Marianas, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Ponape, Truk, and Yap in 1969.

In 1976, the Northern Mariana Islands established a Commonwealth in political union with the United States. Following the dissolution of the Trust Territory, the Northern Mariana Islands came under US sovereignty on November 4, 1986, and the islanders became US citizens.
